Designer: Torii Kiyohiro Era: Early Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ¥ 9,000$ 67.00£ 49.75€ 57.00   Description: Torii Kiyohiro belong to the Torii school of ukiyo-e, all of his known works are benizuri-e (“pink printed picture”) meaning that the palettes of these early multicolored prints were resrticted, in this case pink and green were the two predominant colors. This print depicts a high class courtesan (tayu) leaning against the stairs while smoking a Japanese pipe (kiseru). It's an early example of color printing of ukiyo-e, where the colored areas were also applied using woodblocks. The use of two colors, light red or pink and green, is applied effectively. This print is originally from a set titled "Famous Collection of Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints," produced from Takamizawa Enji's woodblocks and published by Daiichi Shobo. According to old catalogues, it appears that after Takamizawa Enji's passing, the Takamizawa family loaned the woodblocks to Daiichi Shobo for reproduction. The catalogue for the set states that the red seal of "Dobutsu Yusui (土佛遊水)" on the print serve as proof. The backside has remnants of backing paper and the paper is toned.
