Description: This print by Kikukawa Eizan, an artist well known for his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), depicts a young beauty standing on a platform beneath softly falling snow. She holds a traditional Japanese umbrella, sheltering herself from the snowflakes that drift quietly around her. In the background, a small section of a pirogue on the water completes the landscape.

The design belongs to a set of three prints representing the classical theme of Snow, Moon, and Flowers (Fūryū meisho setsugekka). As the gently falling snow makes clear, this image represents the Snow theme.

Particularly striking is the modernity of the kimono’s palette and patterns. The black outer robe with white stripes contrasts beautifully with the soft greens, oranges, yellows, and whites that animate the floral and geometric motifs.

The version featured here is a reproduction published by Ishu Kanko-kai and produced by Kajikawa Kobo probably in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
