Designer: Kobayashi Kiyochika Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This complete triptych entitled “Matsuchiyama and Snowy Twilight” is from the series “True Views of Famous Places in Tokyo”. It includes three prints inside a blue hard case accompanied by an explanatory sheet in Japanese. It was published by the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints. The composition depicts a ferry near Matsuchiyama Shōten Shrine, which rises on the hill at left in the background. Snow-covered houses line the riverbank, partially concealed beneath the winter landscape. A lone figure carrying an umbrella crosses a bridge, which spans a valley along the river. Below, houseboats, cargo boats, rafts, and even a small steamboat move upstream. In the foreground, a section of a ferry boat is shown being rowed across the water. Snow has settled on the passengers’ hats and umbrellas. The design blends Japanese and Western visual elements. Western influence appears in details such as a cloak and umbrella, while traditional Japanese attire — paper umbrellas, straw hats, and raincoats — anchors the scene in Edo-period daily life. As noted in the accompanying explanation sheet, Kobayashi Kiyochika’s work is “characterized by the use of traditional ukiyo-e techniques, while his landscapes incorporate Western-style light and shadow, perspective, and a distinctively poetic sensibility. He paid close attention to the ever-changing qualities of light, striving to capture its fleeting beauty”. Here, traditional woodblock techniques are used to convey a thoroughly modern atmosphere. The figures in the boat are rendered with minimal brushwork and bold, simplified color areas. The pale palette enhances the sense of stillness and tranquility, enveloping the scene in a soft winter hush. Light toning on all 3 prints. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
