Description: This print comes from The Fifty-Four Chapters of The Tale of Genji, published by Yamada Shoin in 1953.

The depicted story, The Tale of Genji, is a long novel written by Murasaki Shikibu. It follows the life and romantic affairs of Hikaru Genji, as well as the later life of his son, Kaoru. Considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Japanese classical literature, it portrays the aristocratic society of the Heian period and is renowned for its elegant prose and subtle psychological insight.

The prints wonderfully convey the elegance, wit, and refined atmosphere of the Heian court and are regarded as one of the finest works by the artist Ebina Masao (1913–1980). It employs luxurious woodblock techniques such as mica highlights, soft bokashi gradations, and delicate embossing.

This print is Chapter 15.
The paper is thin and flexible. Light foxing and mat burn along the border.
