Description: This item is a postcard-sized set of woodblock prints from The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido mounted in an album. It opens with Hiroshige’s portrait by Toyokuni, followed by a biography of Hiroshige written by the publisher, Murakami Shizuto, and a table of contents presented first in Japanese and then in English. After that, the album contains fifty-five woodblock prints in total. The prints are beautifully executed with fine detail. It is interesting to note that they likely selected designs from the Great Tokaido second version or later state. A comparison of the different versions can be seen on this website.

The set was published by the Ukiyo-e Research Society and appears to be a postwar reprint, though the exact date is unknown.

Each print is first mounted on a backing sheet and then affixed to the pages of the album. The album itself has a cloth cover, is bound in book form, and comes housed in an outer case.

The dimensions given are for each print. The outer case sise is 19.5 x 26 cm.


The prints are in good condition overall. However, the front page, Hiroshige portrait is heavily toned and the page has tear at the top edge, and some prints has slight foxing. Also, the last album page and the inner back cover has foxing and toning and the title seal on the outside case is torn.

The album comes in a cloth-covered case.
