Description: This set comprises ten envelopes printed using the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock technique. Although only six of them have the publisher’s seal “Matsukyu,” it is assumed that all were issued by the same publisher, as they share identical dimensions and a similar paper quality.

Each envelope features a distinct decorative design. Four examples have a stamp reading Shōsō-in, which is the treasure house of Tōdai-ji Temple in Nara. This suggests that the patterns may have been inspired by textiles, ornamental motifs, or decorative wallpapers preserved inside.

The designs range from floral and figurative compositions, for example a traditional Japanese rickshaw. They are rendered without contour lines, relying instead on soft and bold colors.

The set is contained in a folded green paper wrapper that functions as an outer envelope.

The dimensions given are for each print.

The outer envelope and the envelopes inside are toned.
