The diptych presents an intimate contrast between interior and exterior spaces. On the right sheet, three courtesans sit inside a tatami room, gazing through wide-open shōji doors onto a snow-covered garden. Their attention is fixed on the two young apprentices shown on the left sheet. One is gathering cherry blossoms from a branch, subtly suggesting the approach of spring, while the other plays with her pipe and an icicle hanging from the roof’s edge. The cherry blossom pattern of her kimono echoes the flowers on the tree. The scene invites contemplation and slowness, it captures a fleeting and quotidian moment on a winter morning and conveys a sense of calm and stillness. The original printing was made around 1784, during the peak of Kiyonaga's career, and is characterized by its coherent depiction of figures and the beauty of its colors.
