Description: This print is a woodblock reproduction of a screen painting from the early 1700s. It was made by the Tansei-sha company (from Kyoto) in the early 1980s, as part of a set of reproductions of classical paintings (we have a few others from the set in our catalogue at the moment ...).

This was the 'bubble era' in Japan, when the streets were awash in cash. Projects that would - in more sensible times - have been not financially viable, were able to attract enough buyers to move forward, and Tansei-sha made the most of this opportunity. (As did the Momose Company, which made a large number of reproductions of paintings in the same period.)

This print is a reproduction of a part of the 49 fusuma-e (襖絵), sliding screen paintings in Myōshin-ji temple (妙心寺) in Kyoto. It's spectacularly depicting a crane crying in the water, using mostly black and white.
