Description: This scene depicts two young women walking side by side along a dock, embracing one another, they modestly cover their faces in the moment they encounter a man seated inside a boat. One woman wears a robe decorated with cherry blossoms, a flower strongly associated with Ono no Komachi, a celebrated ninth-century poet.

The image illustrates a poem by Komachi, inscribed within the cloud above:

I that am lonely,
 Like a reed root-cut—
 Should a stream entice me,
 Would go, I think.
