Designer: Kitagawa Utamaro Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This work is from Utamaro's celebrated series Ten Types in the Physiognomic Study of Women, which brought him sudden fame as an artist. In these works, executed in the ōkubi-e ("large-head portrait") style that focuses on the upper half of the figure, Utamaro sought to express various inner qualities and temperaments of women, inspired by the concept of sōgaku (physiognomy). In this print, he effectively employs a bold composition that contrasts light and shadow cast by the lantern, making the upper part of the woman's face beautifully stand out. This version is a post-war reproduction by Kyoeido. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
