Description: Selections from Six Houses of Famous Beauties is a series depicting six renowned beauties of Edo. In 1793, artists were prohibited from writing the names of women other than courtesans on their prints. As a creative workaround, Utamaro incorporated their names as hanji-e (rebus pictures) at the top of the composition. In this print, the combination of a dragon (tatsu), a snake (mi), a watchtower (yagura or roko), and incense (kō) is read as “Tatsumi Rokō.”

This version is a post-war reproduction by Kyoeido.
