Description: Ohashi Gekko was a distinguished Kabuki painter. We can appreciate his artistic skills inside this complete set of six woodblock prints published by the Kyoto Hanga-in.

The compositions feature full-length figures of performers, dressed in richly ornamented and colorful costumes. Against either bold or minimal backgrounds, the characters radiate presence and drama, embodying the brilliance of the Kabuki stage.

As Kyoto Hanga-in director Kiyomi Shinagawa notes in the accompanying booklet, Mr. Ohashi “grasps the intrinsic spirit of the Kabuki due to his associations with leading actors, with whom he was luckily acquainted.”


The set is accompanied by a pamphlet offering explanations and background stories in English and Japanese for each piece.

Each print portrays a celebrated characters from a different Kabuki play: Shinju Ten-no-Amijima (Double Suicide at Ten-no-Amijima),
