Designer: Miyagawa Shuntei Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This print is part of the series "Children’s Customs and Manners" (Kodomo Fuzoku) by Miyagawa Shuntei. The series consists of two sets of 24 prints, each illustrating children engaged in various activities—from seasonal and indoor/outdoor play to festive events and scenes of everyday life during the Meiji era. Shuntei’s designs are distinguished by their detailed figures, featuring pale tones, soft brushwork, and a subtle color palette evoking a nostalgic view of childhood. This print depicts a group of boys joyfully participating in the Taru Mikoshi Matsuri. Several of the boys are seen carrying what appears to be a large straw sake barrel, part of a portable shrine (mikoshi) believed to be inhabited by a Shinto deity. In some versions of the festival, the mikoshi is large enough to hold nine sake barrels and even two adults. At the front of the group, another boy proudly holds a giant red lantern, leading the procession with enthusiasm. This print is backed and there are some stains. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
