Description: Okuyama Gihachiro (1907-1981) was a printmaker known for his work in both the Sosaku and Shin-hanga styles. Born in Yamagata Prefecture, he studied under Kosaka Gajin and began exhibiting his prints with the Nihon Sōsaku-Hanga Kyōkai around 1927. He also had a successful career in commercial art, founding his own advertising company in 1931 and creating posters, designs, and advertisements in a woodblock print style. In 1942, he co-founded the Shin Hanga Kyōkai with Umetaro Azechi and Uichi Takayama. His work is characterized by two distinct styles: colorful prints reflecting the Shin-hanga style and monochromatic black-and-white prints in the sosaku style.

This print is depicting the Yagiri Ferry one of the last remaining traditional ferry crossing in Tokyo, which has served to ferry patrons between the banks of Shibamata & Shimoyakiri since the early Edo period (1603-1868). The signpost marks the location as “矢切の渡し” (Yagiri no Watashi).
