Description: This is a full set of prints of what is perhaps the single most famous series of Japanese woodblock prints ever produced, "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido", designed by Hiroshige in the 1830s.

But this particular item is a Tokaido set with a difference - it has been 'curated' by Mokuhankan.

During the post-war period, a number of the top publishers in Tokyo issued complete sets of Hiroshige's Tokaido series; it was quite a popular item during that period. But even though many sets were sold, it is far from common these days to find sets that are both complete and in good condition. We do have such items in our catalogue occasionally, but we have also come up with another way to solve the problem, and this is the result.

In each of our curated sets you will find a mix of prints from different publishers, typically: Takamizawa, Adachi, O-Edo, Yamada Shoin, Kato, and Yuyudo. We have selected individual prints from otherwise unsuitable sets, looking for prints that are nicely made and of course in good condition. They are all at the same dimension as the originals published in Hiroshige's time.

The prints are stored in a B4 folder, and we have included descriptive sheets, in both English and Japanese, in an accompanying of B5 folder.

This is actually, a wonderful way to store and view the prints.

Please note that this version is slightly smaller than the original size. The dimensions given are for each print, and the file size is approximately 29cm x 37cm.

Hiroshige's Tokaido designs were discussed in a 'David's Choice' YouTube video in October of 2020, which also featured one of the sets typical of the post-war era ... the one from Takamizawa. And you can see in the video just how clumsy the post-war packaged sets are - it is next to impossible to view the prints comfortably, not to mention the fact that the packing materials are far from modern preservation standards (which is why we come across so many foxed prints from that era ...)
