Description: This print is from the series "Traditional Practices: Collection of Palaquins", published in 1900 by Yoshikawa Hanshichi. It documents various types of palanquins used in ceremonial and official contexts throughout Japanese history.

When the Emperor traveled outside the palace, ox-drawn carriages (牛車, gyūsha) were not used. Instead, a human-carried palanquin known as a Ren (輦) was employed, borne on the shoulders of porters. This contrasted with the palanquins used by commoners, which were typically carried at waist height. There were two primary types of imperial Ren: Houren (鳳輦), topped with a gold-plated phoenix, and Sokaren (葱花輦) adorned with a sacred jewel on its roof.

The design depicted here features a group of porters carrying a Sokaren (葱花輦). The palanquin’s lavish decorations on the walls reflect the wealth and prestige of the Emperor.
