Tokaido-chu Hizakurige ( 東海道中膝栗毛), was a long extended story written in 1802 by Jippensha Ikku ( 十返舎 一九, 1765~1831). It followed two characters - Yajirobe and Kitahachi - as they made their way down the road, having various adventures along the way. The story served two purposes: it was entertainment in its own right - Yaji and Kita did have many interesting adventures - but it also served as a guide to the Tokaido for those who had never been along the road. Thee book was re-published many times over the years, and Ikku himselfcreated many sequels. The story became an integral part of Japanese culture of the Edo era. This particular series of prints was created in 1918 (Taisho 7), with designs by Fujikawa Tamenobu (藤川為信), picking up some of the more 'entertaining' episodes from the book. ![]() ![]() This scene illustrates the 2 heroes at the Chiryu station where a horse market was held on the eastern edge, attracting people from the surrounding area.
