Description: This print is from a reproduction set of 25 excellent Kabuki actor and sumo wrestler portraits by Sharaku, published by O-edo Mokuhansha around 1972. These reproductions are luxuriously finished with a mica (kirazuri) background.

The actor Ōtani Tokuji I is presented here as Sodesuke, a manservant of the Ishii brothers (who are intent on exacting revenge on their father's murderer), from the play Hana Ayame Bunroku Soga. Sodesuke's loyalty is expressed in his gaze, and his readiness to fight in his clenched fist. The MET holds an early impression of the portrait.
