Description: This print is from a reproduction set of 25 excellent Kabuki actor and sumo wrestler portraits by Sharaku, published by O-edo Mokuhansha around 1972. These reproductions are luxuriously finished with a mica (kirazuri) background.

The onnagata actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu Ⅲ (also known as Ichikawa Aragorô I) is presented here delicately holding a folded fan in the role of Shirabito Onayo (a courtesan based in Gian) from the play Hana Ayame Bunroku Soga. The MET holds an early impression of the portrait.
