Description: This print is from a reproduction set of 25 excellent Kabuki actor and sumo wrestler portraits by Sharaku, published by O-edo Mokuhansha around 1972. These reproductions are luxuriously finished with a mica (kirazuri) background.

The actors Nakajima Wadaemon and Nakamura Konozō are presented here in the roles of Bōdara no Chōzaemon and the boat-keeper Kanagawaya no Gon respectively, characters from the play Katakiuchi Noriyaibanashi. Kanagawaya no Gon leads Bōdara no Chōzaemon through the pleasure district with a lantern in-hand in the illustration. The MET holds an early impression of the portrait.
