Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketSegawa Kikunojo III (L)![]() Size: 39.5cm by 27.0cm (15.55 in by 10.63 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Toshusai Sharaku Era: Mid Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This print is from a reproduction set of 25 excellent Kabuki actor and sumo wrestler portraits by Sharaku, published by O-edo Mokuhansha around 1972. These reproductions are luxuriously finished with a mica (kirazuri) background. The onnagata actor Segawa Kikunojō III (also known as Segawa Senjo) is presented here as Oshizu, the wife of Tanabe Bunzō, from the play Hana Ayame Bunroku Soga. Her prominent features and posture (with her hand tucked into her obi) are interesting aspects of the print - is she about to pull something out from her sash, or is it simply a mannerism? The MFA holds an early impression of the portrait. Took off from shop, there are foxing/mold spots on the print not visible on the photo. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
