The courtesan depicted in this is Morokoshi of Echizenya at Yoshiwara, and she is associated with the lily shown on the left. Morokoshi is shown with her chin resting on her hand in front of a tanzaku, deep in thought about what poem to compose. Her black gauze room wear suggests a relaxed setting. The technique called "gomasuri," which creates a grainy texture, makes the red undergarment faintly visible through and creating the coarse texture of the fabric.
