Description: This scene takes place at the gold mines of Sado province; an island which later became part of Niigata prefecture. Workers are seen outside of the mines in this mountainous area.

This design is part of the ‘Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces’ series by Ando Hiroshige. He created one famous view from each of the (back then) 68 provinces of Japan. With one additional print of Edo (now Tokyo) and a list of contents, the series consists of 70 prints in total. The series was first published by Koshimuraya Heisuke from 1853 to 1856. This version is a post-war reproduction by Mainichi Art Publishing.
