Designer: Totoya Hokkei Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This print is from the series Shokoku meisho (Famous Places in the Provinces), signed by Aoigaoka Hokkei—better known as Totoya Hokkei, a prominent disciple of Hokusai. The series appeared shortly after Hokusai’s renowned Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, reflecting Hokkei’s own interpretation of famous landscapes. The winter scene depicts the Hakone checkpoint blanketed in snow. A group of travelers arrives at the gate, where they are being received by a figure at the entrance. Within the checkpoint barriers, a partially opened shōji screen offers a glimpse into a tatami room, where someone is seated, possibly observing the commotion outside. Snow-covered mountains rise in the background, framing the composition and enhancing the stillness of the winter setting. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
