Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketCourtesan Tomimoto Toyohina![]() Size: 40.5cm by 27.0cm (15.94 in by 10.63 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Kitagawa Utamaro Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This print depicts the lady Tomimoto Toyohina, a famously beautiful geisha, admiring a surimono (摺物, ephemeral woodblock-printed paper often featuring poetry). She is dressed in robes that feature her crest - the Japanese primrose. While it is often said in descriptions of this print that she is reading a letter, this is unlikely, as we can see no text on the paper, which is instead patterned with chrysanthemums. The paper is actually probably a surimono printed on thick Japanese paper and folded in two. The original print is thought to have been produced around 1793. A post-war reproduction by Takamizawa Company. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
