This is the right sheet of a diptych, which presents a lively domestic scene set in a bustling kitchen, portraying four women engaged in various tasks. This part shows a woman who tends to the fire, stoking it carefully, while another is preparing tea. The most striking figure is the beauty at the upper right, who reaches through a delicate cloud of smoke to retrieve a teakettle from atop the fire. Utamaro’s attention to detail, from the fine kimonos to the tools of the kitchen, impregnates the scene with authenticity, making this diptych an intimate glimpse into the daily domestic life of women in the 18th century.
