Designer: Ando Hiroshige Era: Taisho | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: Part of a monthly subscription series of three woodblock prints issued by the Yamato Hanga Kanko-kai in ca. 1924. This print is an homage to the "Ukifune" chapter from "The Tale of Genji", blending a timeless story with the beauty of Edo landscapes. In this artwork from the series "Famous Places in Edo" matched with "The Tale of Genji", Hiroshige presents a serene winter scene that subtly nods to the chapter’s theme— "Ukifune," or "A Boat Cast Adrift” where a beautiful young noblewoman jumps from a boat, but is rescued. The young beauty stands under her umbrella on a ferry crossing the Sumida River, surrounded by softly falling snow. Her umbrella, partially covered in snowflakes, complements the golden flecks in the background, which echo Genji-inspired motifs and bring a sense of elegance and opulence to the design. We see only the umbrellas of two other passengers next to her. In the distance, a man rows a raft while three birds pass overhead, bringing movement to the tranquil scene. There are traces of glue removal and red marks on the back of this print. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
