Designer: Chobunsai Eishi Era: Taisho | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: Part of a monthly subscription series of three woodblock prints issued by the Yamato Hanga Kano-khai in ca. 1924. This print depicts the famous courtesan Kisagata of the Ohishiya house, gracefully strolling at night accompanied by two shinzō (apprentice courtesans) and a kamuro (child apprentice). Cherry tree branches in full bloom arch gently above, framing the figures and adding a sense of seasonal beauty, enhancing the elegance of the scene and the nocturnal ambiance. The restrained palette of blacks, whites, yellows, grays, and touches of green adds a peaceful and slightly enigmatic mood to the scene. Eishi’s meticulous attention to patterns and textures—particularly in the detailed ornamentation of the courtesans' garments—enlivens the composition, making the figures stand out within the limited color scheme. There are traces of glue removal on the back of this print. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
