Description: [Special note: we are currently featuring a group of prints in partnership with 'Sakai Kokodo', print dealers here in Tokyo who have been in business since the 1870s. Their shops are currently closed due to the pandemic, and as they have no online presence in English, we have invited them to join us here for the time being.

The prints we will include will all be originals from either the late Edo or the Meiji period, and are selected from their vast collection. This is the same company/family that owns and operates the 'Japan Ukiyo-e Museum' in Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture.

We hope you enjoy these selections. We here at Mokuhankan are enjoying (and learning from) these prints during the time that they are temporarily here with us!]

* * *

This is a triptych designed by Kuniyoshi in the late 1840s. It is a theme to which he returned a number of times (the market for battle scenes like this was insatiable in his day), and depicts the historical episode of the last stand of the Kusunoki clan at Shijo-Nawate in the mid-1300s.

A barrage of arrows ... severed heads ... the scene is an absolute nightmare. Perfect Kuniyoshi.

Condition notes: the prints are unbacked, on extremely thin paper, and will need to be handled with extreme care. They were trimmed to the image edge at some point in the past.

The bottom right corner of each sheet shows faint traces of an expert repair in the past, where previous handling must have damaged the corner. The overall preservation is excellent.

The dimension displayed is the approximate size of each print.
