Description: Ishikawa Toyonobu worked in the early days of ukiyo-e, and the original version of this (large size) print dates from the period when full-colour printing had yet to be invented.

Our print - created by the Adachi company in the post-war period - includes a data sheet, quoted here:

"The print depicts the elopement scene from the play Yoritomo Gumbai Kagami, performed at the Nakamura-za theatre in the 11th month of Kan'en 2 (1749). At the right is the actor Ichimura Kamezo as Wanya Kyüzaemon, and at the left the actor Nakamura Kiyosaburó as the courtesan Matsuyama.

The print here exploits very effectively the features of the primitive color print (benizuri-e). It has a tranquil and spacious air, combined with a sense of poetry and amorousness. All this is perfectly matched to the lyric formalism of Toyonobu's style. It would be difficult, in fact, to point to a finer or more characteristic work among all of Toyonobu's prints. The print is signed "Tanjódo Ishikawa Shoha Toyonobu" and sealed Ishikawa and Toyonobu. The seal at bottom left is the trademark of the publisher Urokogataya."
