Description: Ayumi Shiba is one of the young ladies who trained at Mokuhankan back in its early days, in multiple capacities: she worked in the shop helping explain the prints to visitors; she hosted Print Parties; and she worked as a staff printer, creating work to be sold to customers and subscribers.

But these days she focuses her efforts on her own printmaking, and this print is one of her creations - from concept, through design, and all the carving and printing ... herself.

Shiba-san’s comments on this print: In 8th-century Japan, an ambitious Emperor seeks to centralize the nation. To the imperial court, those who stood against them were labeled as Emishi, the "unsubdued," and branded as literal demons.

But as the legendary general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro faces the fierce Emishi chieftain Aterui, the line between hero and monster begins to blur. Is a "demon" truly a supernatural terror, or is it a mask we place upon those we wish to conquer?
