Description: After the great success of "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido," Hiroshige's next large-scale series of landscape paintings was "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," picking up the theme so successfully treated by his senior Hokusai.


It was the last of Hiroshige's major works, and he passed away before it was (posthumously) published in 1876. Although some of his landscapes depict the same locations as Hokusai's series, the nicely balanced composition and color tones in the vertical format give the work a sense of season, poetry, and a calm impression.

This print shows Mt. Fuji from the south coast of Cape Honmoku with Isogo Beach in the foreground. The dramatically steep cliff in Honmoku has been replaced by an industrial landfill area. So, only in this print, we can appreciate a serene view of Mt. Fuji that is no longer accessible in the present landscape.

This particular print is a reproduction by Adachi company published in 1998.
