David's Choice comes to video ...

Posted by Dave Bull on March 10, 2017 [Permalink]

Do you remember David's Choice? If you came to any of my Tokyo exhibitions back in the 2000s, you should remember that each show always had a 'corner' featuring prints from my own small print collection.

I selected prints that I thought were a bit interesting, for one reason or another, and put them on display with a very short explanation ...

This was always a very popular part of the shows, and I followed up by making an audio presentation of some of the items.

And now ... we have the next iteration, in video form. Here's the first experiment ... to be followed by more? It all depends on the reaction ...

Dave, you commented that the juxtposition of the shachi and Mt Fuji would be easily achieved with a telephoto lens. Would this not also be achieved by viewing through a telescope. It is easy to imagine Hokusai looking through a telecope to see the rooftop details, and then seeing this juxtposition and going "wow" and drawing like this. Telescopes appeared in Japan as early as 1613 (http://www.narit.or.th/en/files/2008JAHHvol11/2008JAHH...11..203N.pdf) and it's hard to imagine someone like Hokusai not playing around with one if he got his hands on it.

"I should get busy with David’s Choice episode #2 … I wonder if I can possibly find something to talk about ..."

Dave, you must be kidding right? I'm sure you could fill great videos about prints and printmaking till kingdom come ...

So, whatever you do, please continue with your just started David's Choice video series!

I knew the Hokusai print you discussed in #1 with Edo castle up close and Mount Fuji in the distance very well, but it was completely new to me that it must have taken Hokusai such a leap of the imagination to conceive, very interesting!

Apart from Paul Jones's suggestion over on facebook, and further discussions of prints that you find to be special for one reason or another, I would also be very interested to hear/see you devote a video session to the "materials question":

How is the current quality of the Echizen Hosho paper, has it gone up again, or is it still terrible? If so, how are you dealing with this? Are all your carving blocks self-made these days? How is Mark II, your second sizing machine, progressing? Etc., etc.

I did have my tongue in cheek, of course ... I haven't yet started to make a list of topics, but I don't anticipate having any problems finding good ones!
