Description: 46 pages, many figures and illustrations

From the Editor's Preface to this Mokuhankan edition: This is the fourth volume in the Mokuhankan 'Classics of Woodblock Printmaking' series, following earlier publication of the famous books by Hiroshi Yoshida, Frank Morley-Fletcher, and John Platt.

This is a fabulous ‘snapshot’ of the state of Japanese woodblock printmaking at the end of the 19th century. The Japanese government of the day made a gift to the U.S. National Museum of a complete set of printmaking equipment, including carving and printing tools, pigments, blocks, paper samples - everything involved in the process of making prints. In addition to the materials themselves, illustrated written descriptions of many aspects of the craft were included, and this pamphlet is a detailed summary of those descriptions.

The museum editor who prepared the material for publication seems to have gone to great care to ensure accuracy of the facts and figures involved, being involved in a great deal of correspondence with Mr. Tokuno, his contact in Japan. The second half of the volume contains his extensive discussion of Japanese techniques compared to traditions common in Europe.

This long out-of-print pamphlet is a mine of information to anyone with an interest in the Japanese traditional printmaking methods. I am happy to play a part in helping keep it available to aspiring (and practicing) printmakers. I hope you find it useful.

Note: Please understand that this is a research pamphlet, not a 'how to' book, and is most useful to people with some experience in the field already. If you are looking for a 'manual' on how to make a woodblock print, this is not it. Please try one of the other books listed below ...

About this eBook: As with all Mokuhankan eBooks, this volume contains the entire content of the original version; nothing has been omitted from the book published by United States National Museum in 1894.
